The Intersex Campaign for Equality (aka OII-USA) and The Center for Gender and Sexuality Law are pleased to present: “The Right to Legally Exist: An IAD Talk with Dana Zzyym”, a lunchtime panel discussion on #IntersexAwarenessDay (IAD), October 26th, 2016 at Columbia Law School. The panel will feature OII-USA Associate Director, Dana Zzyym, who was recently honored as an OUT FRONT 2016 Power Awards Winner, and advocates from Lambda Legal.

On Intersex Awareness Day 2015, Zzyym announced that they, with Lambda Legal, were filing a federal discrimination lawsuit against the U.S. State Department, as Zzyym had been denied a U.S. passport because they could not accurately choose either male or female on the passport application form, and the form does not provide any other gender marker designation. Zzyym was born intersex and identifies as a non-binary intersex person, and is seeking accurate legal gender recognition.

Dana will discuss their experiences as an activist, and the path that led them to their work with OII-USA. For more details on Zzyym and OII-USA, see the OII-USA page here: https://www.intersexequality.com/about/directors/

For more details regarding the suit, read an article from Lambda Legal on the case, here: http://www.lambdalegal.org/in-court/cases/co_zzyym-v-kerry, or this article, from the Los Angeles Times: http://www.latimes.com/nation/la-na-intersex-lawsuit-20160720-snap-story.html.

This event is free and open to the public. Lunch will be served.

October 26th is Intersex Awareness Day (IAD). The day is honored internationally, with action being led by non-profit, advocacy and education-focused organizations to raise awareness of intersex persons, and to advocate for their rights in legal systems around the world.
