E.D. Hida Viloria in the Groundbreaking GENDERNAUTS
Gendernauts is the groundbreaking, multi award-winning 1999 documentary by German filmmaker Monika Truet, which shows us a group of artists in San Francisco who live between the poles of conventional gender identities, including ICE’s own Hida Viloria. The New York Times review of the film, after it’s February 4, 2000, United States premiere at Manhattan’s Cinema Village, had this to say about our E.D.:
“Hida Viloria, a voluble hermaphrodite with exquisite cheekbones, can pass effortlessly from ravishing femininity to sullen machismo. Having lived credibly as a woman and as a man, Hida, like Stafford, now seems happiest occupying ”the middle ground” between them.”
In this 5:49 minute video clip, of Hida’s segment in the film, s/he talks about some of comical experiences being intersex & about feeling like neither a man or a woman, or both — essentially, about being non-binary, or genderqueer, although those terms weren’t in use yet back then. Enjoy!
