Del LaGrace Volcano is a non-binary intersex American photographer who has been challenging the norms of gender for over two decades through their pioneering photographic work. Their photography has been exhibited throughout the world, including the Leslie-Lohman Museum of Gay and Lesbian Art in New York City. The exhibit, “Del LaGrace Volcano: A Mid-Career Retrospective,” explored “identities, genders and desires” that exist beyond the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) spectrum.
Del is also a long-time intersex activist, and the creator of Visibly Intersex, 2011-2017:
“Visibly Intersex is an ongoing collaborative project that really took off in 2011 at an intersex activist forum sponsored by ILGA. All of the people in the project are intersex activists and most were photographed at the various intersex forums, conferences and community events I have managed to attend in the past 6 years.”
Volcano has published five books to date, as seen below.
Femmes of Power (2008)
Sex Works (2005), featuring an essay by Beatriz Preciado.
Sublime Mutations (2000)
The Drag King Book (1999), co-authored with Judith “Jack” Halberstam.
Love Bites (1991), as Della Grace.
