Yesterday, in his “Executive Order on Advancing Equality for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer, and Intersex Individuals,” President Biden became the first US President to include intersex-Americans in the fight for equality!

Last year, during an Intersex Round Table meeting held by White House staff including Dr. Rachel Levine, of the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), on October 26th, in honor of Intersex Awareness Day, our ED Hida Viloria noted that the US federal government had not, like others, included the intersex community by name in the LGBT “+” population–and called the on the administration to do so. This year, they did, and we could not be more grateful!

We thank and commend the Biden-Harris Administration for their unprecented inclusion and human rights work, and look forward to the opportunities for advancing intersex equality that the executive order provides! It is the first time that the intersex population and our needs are being examined under an equality based, human rights lens, and the potential for positive change is enormous!
