Did politics & money meddle with the passage of SB 201? (Photo)

The Los Angeles Blade’s excellent coverage yesterday on the lack of passage of SB 201, which would have banned medically unnecessary surgeries on intersex infants and young minors, featured an interesting photo, seen below:

The photo verifies reports earlier this week that just three days before the California Senate Business, Professions and Economic Development Committee was set top vote on the bill, the California Medical Association donated $50,000 to coalition supporting Committee Chair Senator Steve Glazer’s reelection. Senator Glazer (D-Orinda) abstained from voting not SB 201, which is tantamount to a no.

Senator Glazer is up for re-election this year. We urge all intersex constituents to remember that he did not show up for our community, and note that his challenger, progressive democrat Marisol Rubio, a scientific researcher, health care provider and disability advocate, has already received the endorsement of the California Federation of Teachers and California School Employees Association.
